Why is Lebanese food so good for you?

July 5, 2017 By Sarah-Jean Ballard

There is no doubt that Lebanese food tastes amazing. Its popularity has spread from humble origins to appreciation on an international scale. Mezza Lebanese grill restaurants are opening up throughout Australia, and across the globe. Traditional recipes are passed down through the generations and are now being used to create food which is enjoyed by people from a myriad of different cultures.

It’s the fresh ingredients that go into making Lebanese cuisine, which make it taste so good. They also make it one of the healthiest types of cooking to enjoy.

The benefits of fresh fruit and vegetables

Lebanese cuisine places a lot of reliance on the use of fresh fruit and vegetables. Much of the produce that is used is sourced locally to where meals are produced. Most people know that eating five portions of fruit or vegetables each day is an important part of any healthy diet. Eating this amount helps to ensure that you get the vitamins and minerals that you need. Even if you are not a massive fan of fruit and vegetables, you may find that you start to enjoy them as a constituent of delicious Lebanese food.

A healthy attitude to cooking

If you see anyone cooking a Lebanese meal, you will see that they use olive oil. This type of oil is a lot healthier to cook with than butter, or animal fats.

Getting the best from herbs

Herbs like mint and parsley feature heavily in Lebanese cuisine. They help to give it that distinctive flavor. They also have health benefits; mint helps with digestion and parsley contains high amounts of vitamins K, C, and A.

Light and delicious spices, not heavy sauces

Some types of cuisine rely quite heavily on sauces when it comes to giving food its flavor. These sauces can seem heavy to eat. They are also often rich, which is not ideal if you want to eat healthily. Obviously, there is a place for all different types of cuisine in this world; as long as less healthy dishes are eaten in moderation.

Eating Lebanese food can help to offset the less healthy aspects of food from other nations. This is because anyone cooking a Lebanese meal makes use of spices rather than sauces, to add flavor. One of the most popular additions to Lebanese food is Za’atar which is a spice mixture. This mixture can be used to create a main meal or to create a taste bud tingling dip. One thing is for sure, once you have tasted it, you will not forget it.

Lebanese cuisine has been accepted by western culture very easily. It’s obvious why this is the case. Every meal you eat tastes fresh and interesting. You also get the benefit of all those healthy ingredients. Even the main meat used in Lebanese cookery is good for you. Lamb is the favored meat, and grass fed lamb at that. A great taste and a good health rating have helped make Lebanese cuisine as popular as it is.
